Click to expand. All it means is US Repeating Arms is not going to be manufacturing them under the Winchester name. Winchester themselves haven't been making them for some time, just as Olin has been manufacturing ammo under the Winchester name for years. Someone else will license them and continue to make them. FN is already making their own version of the 1300 defender: It's not the end of the world. Maybe more of an opportunity to pick up a few guns that short-sighted retailers will try to move at a loss.
Disappointing, but two bright spots. One, your Model 94 just went up in value.
Hell, even the newer ones with the unsightly angle eject, cross bolt safety and rebounding hammer. 94s (like my two) were already collectors items and this may not affect their values. Ditto on your Model 70s - they might go up in value, too. Even the push-feed models. Time will tell on this, of course.
Second, another good thing is that Marlin still makes lever-actions.better ones IMHO and Remington, Ruger, Savage and CZ still make nice affordable bolt guns that are as good or better than the M-70. Not much of a loss in the marketplace with the Mod. 70 going away. You still have plenty of good choices.
The 1300's end? Hey, the Remington 870 was always a better pump gun (so was the Ithaca 37, even though it is not as popular) and everything since the great Model 12s was just a compromise. Not a great loss in the 1300 going away. Yes, overall, its a shame to see mainstay items go away, but Winchester as we know it has never been the same company, since its 're-organization' in 1963. I have a kinda oddball Model 12, but with some research reading & this great forum, I have a better idea of what I have. It is a Model 12, 12 Ga., 30' Solid rib, Full choke, 3' Super Speed-Super X, Straight grip English stock checkered at the wrist, Checkered extension forearm, Ser.
# 179XXXX (1959?). So would the correct terminology = Super Field Grade Heavy Duck Solid Rib English Stock? That's a mouthful! Could this be a type of Trap gun? Did any Trap guns have 3' chambers? It does not say Trap. I would like to know approximate value.
It is in very, very good condition. I did not notice any booger jobs on the wood or metal.
Ehunter, It might help if you would describe the rifle you actually have, but without that, a G34XXXX (note: a 6 digit number following the 'G') would have been manufactured in about 2000. A G34XXXXX (note: a 7 digit number following the 'G'), to the best of my knowledge was never manufactured. The highest numbers I have ever seen are G304XXXX, and these would be the very latest numbers manufactured before the New Haven plant closed in 2006. I would add that there always seems to be a lot of confusion about the 'G' prefix. To cut to the chase, a serial number with the 'G' prefix, and a serial number without a prefix are plain and simple, different serial numbers.
You cannot use the charts for non-prefix numbers and expect a 'G' prefix number to correlate. Another reason for confusion, is that the 'G' serial numbers do a bit of jumping around. When Winchester began producing the Classics in 1990, they went back and started using lower 'G' prefix numbers, that had never been used, when they started the 'G' prefix in 1969, or whenever, on the push-feeds.
Then they later jumped over the previously used 'G' numbers, to continue on with Classics that have 7 digits following the 'G'. This is all as clear as mud, I am sure! I also might add, if your rifle is not a Classic, all bets are off! I don't follow non-Classic serial numbers! But, I believe any late production rifles should fall into this regime.

I hope nobody minds if I piggyback onto this thread as well. I have 2 Classics: first one - regular Classic Sporter, 270 Win, serial # G3002XXX. Other one - Classic Compact, 7mm-08, serial # G374XXX. I would much appreciate knowing production years for them. Bought new a few years ago but I have no idea if they were new or old stock. Thanks in advance.

One of my Winchesters is a Classic Sporter,.270 w/Boss. It has a strange Serial Number according to the others listed on this thread: G100XX. I'm not reading it wrong either.
Even had the wife put her specks on and read it too. G100XX (5 digits) Might anyone have a date for this one? I know it must be from the somewhere in the 90s. Thanks for any info. 02/12/09 Re: Need to look up Serial number for Winchester m 70 Joined: Aug 2007 Posts: 850 Campfire Regular Campfire Regular Joined: Aug 2007 Posts: 850. I have a 7mm Rem Mag in Win.
M70 Custom Super Grade, controlled round feed, SN G1123. According to my shooting book it was first shot on Dec.20th, 1992. Based on this it was purchased just 2 or 3 days before since I always get them to the range ASAP. How much earlier than this it was built I can't say, but based on the SN it couldn't have been too much before. Maybe this info will help some of you. Further to my post of May 28, 2009 I stumbled over this thread again today and went back and looked in my loading book again. Found I had made an error. 1992 I already had almost 1300 rounds through my Custom Super Grade. It follows that I must have purchased it in Dec., 1991. Don't know what I did with the records for the first 1300 rounds. When making my original post I just looked at the date and not at the number of rounds fired. My 4 digit serial number is correct.

Possibly it is so low because the rifle came through the Custom shop. Jim - 03/05/11 Re: Need to look up Serial number for Winchester m 70 Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 2 New Member New Member Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 2.
